Gospel Centered Recovery

Christ-based, Scripture-grounded community recovery group.

What is Gospel Centered Recovery?

A Christ-based, Scripture-grounded community recovery group that meets weekly to walk alongside people struggling under the weight of addiction and sin. Founded in Des Moines, Iowa, GCR operates a growing national network of local groups. GCR Seward will be one of them.

At its core, GCR is built on one conviction: the power to break free from addiction is not found in a program, but in a Person: Jesus Christ. GCR is not a secular recovery model with religious language layered on top. It holds that the Bible is sufficient, that the Gospel changes everything, and that lasting freedom comes through the transforming work of the Holy Spirit.

“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.”

2 Timothy 3:16-17 NLT

How a GCR Group Works

Every group follows a simple, consistent rhythm: free, weekly, and led by trained volunteer leaders (not professional counselors).

What Gospel Centered Recovery Addresses

GCR’s framework isn’t limited to one addiction. It addresses the heart, so it applies broadly:

  • Alcohol dependency

  • Drug and substance abuse
(Prescription and illicit, including meth and opioids)

  • Pornography and sexual sin

  • Gambling addiction

  • Eating disorders

  • Compulsive behaviors
    (Shopping, screens, work)

  • Anger and rage

  • Relational and emotional wounds

The Need for GCR in Seward County

Seward is a community of roughly 7,000 people (17,000+ countywide), home to Concordia University and a strong network of churches. On the surface, it looks like a community that has its act together, and in many ways,
it does.

But addiction doesn’t respect zip codes, income level, church attendance, or family. Alcohol, drugs (legal and illegal), gambling, sex/porn, and self-harm are but a few of many silent, often hidden ways families, marriages, and individuals are being destroyed here in our communities.

Who Gospel Centered Recovery Is For

Three kinds of people will find their way to a Gospel Centered Recovery meeting:

The Quietly Suffering.
People sitting in your pews, working in local businesses, raising families, carrying addiction in silence, having never told anyone.

The Formerly Churched.
People who drifted from faith, often out
of shame, who need a non-threatening, grace-filled entry point back.

The Never-Churched.
People with no faith background who are simply desperate enough to try. GCR doesn’t require belief to attend. It opens God’s Word and lets the Gospel do the work.
